Tiverton Town Football Club is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished figures. Mike Hawkins, a dedicated Vice President and a cornerstone of the club for decades, passed away last week at the age of 86. To many at “Tivvy Town,” Mike was more than just a volunteer; he was a gentleman, a constant source of joy, and a true legend.
Known for his infectious smile and a joke for every occasion, Mike’s presence at the ground was a staple of the matchday experience. His journey with the club began many years ago, working alongside Gordon Curtis to maintain the pitch and the surrounding grounds. Whether he was driving the tractor or assisting Gordon and Brian Whiting with divot-taking at half-time, Mike was always willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed most. For many supporters, the sight of Mike on his Kubota tractor, meticulously tending to the pitch, remains an enduring and fond memory.
Reflecting on their long partnership, Gordon Curtis noted, “Mike was magnificent, such a help to me for over 25 years.”
As the years progressed, Mike transitioned into the role of Kit Man, a position he held with immense dedication for approximately 30 years. His commitment spanned various eras, including the long-standing tenure of manager Martyn Rogers. Most notably, Mike was by the players’ side during the club’s historic trips to Wembley on three separate occasions—moments that undoubtedly stand as the highlights of his service.
In 2021, the club formally recognized his extraordinary loyalty by appointing him Vice President, an honor that spoke to the profound impact he had on the institution.
Mike’s contribution went far beyond any specific job title; he was the heart of the club. Tiverton Town extends its deepest sympathies to his daughters, Sue and Lin, and his entire family. This Saturday, the club will pause to honor his memory with a one-minute applause.
